A PIN is needed when a student completes the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) on the web to electronically sign the application. Completing and signing your FAFSA online, is much faster than sending in a paper application and signature.
Did you know you can apply for your PIN before you can file the FAFSA? Simply log onto www.pin.ed.gov and request your PIN today. For dependent students, a parent must also request a PIN and sign the application electronically. Down the road, your PIN number is also needed when completing a MPN (master promissory note) online for students borrowing stafford loans.
For students who already have a PIN, but do not remember the number, you can also request a duplicate PIN be sent to you at the link above.
